The author, most recently, of "Leaving Time" hates Russian lit. "You need genealogy charts to just figure out the characters, every novel is a thousand pages and pretty much everyone dies."
... I read this and realized that it could pretty functionally be used to describe the series A Song of Ice and Fire
pretty much equally.
The moral of this story is never EVER become attached to a character created by George R.R. Martin. He is a wonderful writer, but is also utterly ruthless about culling his characters as he sees fit.
